High School Classes

Ruth Martin will be offering the following classes through Martin Educational Services, LLC this fall and spring of 2013-14: Speech 1/Debate 1 – 1 semester each – ½ credit – not required, but highly recommended and colleges LOVE it! And fun! Speech 1 will be held in the FALL; DEBATE 1 in the Spring U. S. History/Lit - 2 semesters/15 weeks each = 2 credits (1 – American Lit/English; 1 – US History) required
World History/Lit - 2 semesters/15 weeks each = 2 credits (1 – World History; 1 – World Lit/English) required
Composition: Essays
- FALL semester only = 1/2 credit Composition: Research - SPRING semester only = 1/2 credit
British Literature/Composition – 2 semesters - 1 credit
Advanced Composition: Responding to Literature - This class is an advanced class for juniors or seniors ONLY. The content is beginning college level and will prepare students for the rigors of a freshman English class. 2 semesters = 1 credit
Creative Writing; Creative Writing 2 - designed to aid students in their creative expression and to improve writing skills at the secondary level. The purpose of this class is to encourage students to cultivate the habits, attitudes and flexibility of a professional writer in a professional writing community. Students will explore different genres and elements of creative writing in a workshop-style setting, i.e. working independently and in groups, critiquing work. Students will concentrate on short story writing, revise their work using concrete, sensory details, appropriate choice of diction, syntax, purpose, and audience. Students will produce work that reflects the process of writing and is publishable to various venues, both online and hard copy. 1 semester = ½ credit.
Creative Writing 2 – Prerequisite: Creative Writing
Creative Writing 2 is designed to aid students in revision of work completed in the fall with the goal of publishing works. Students participate in a weekly Writer’s Workshop setting to encourage sharing of ideas. 1 semester = ½ credit.
Classes should have a minimum of 5 students and are limited to 12 students. You will be notified if your class does not meet the minimum or try to schedule a second session if there are too many. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee per student. The application fee is due upon registration or at the Parent Night meeting scheduled in the late summer, payable to Ruth Martin or Martin Educational Services. Tuition is $240.00 per 12-week class or $20 per week per class or $300 per 15-week class. The History/Lit courses are 2-semesters and require 15 weeks/semester. Payment plans are available. Tuition may be paid by cash or check, payable to the instructor. Regardless of the number of classes students attend, the cost of the course remains $240 or $300. There is a sibling discount for siblings taking the same classes. Classes will meet one day each week for 1 ½ hours. US and World History/Lit will meet for 2 hours each week. Homeschooling work will be assigned to be completed OUTSIDE of class.
